POWERFUL STORIES FROM SAXONY
Cornelia Simon now lives with her partner on a historic manor house in Kössern, near Grimma in Saxony. The former servants’ quarters, part of a Baroque architectural gem, serve as their home, workplace and the centre of their lives. Before moving to Saxony, they both held international management positions, lived in Switzerland and travelled all over the world. Following a career change, they decided to start a new life in the countryside and, with great dedication, restored the property, which at the time was in dire need of renovation.
Today, they practise sustainable self-sufficiency there, following the principles of permaculture. Fruit trees, wild shrubs, a small vineyard and numerous vegetable plots characterise the farm. For Cornelia Simon, who is originally from Munich, nature has evolved from a place of relaxation into a way of life. The forest, the garden and working with wood have now become an integral part of her daily life.
Firewood plays an important role in this, fuelling the heat-storage fireplace in her ecologically renovated house. Together with friends, she collects windfall timber from the forest and processes large quantities of it herself. As smaller log splitters were no longer able to meet her needs, she now regularly uses a HydroCombi log splitter.
Renting the machine is currently the most cost-effective solution for her, even though owning her own log splitter would offer greater flexibility in the future. For her, working with wood is not just a practical necessity, but an expression of a sustainable lifestyle that is close to nature.
My favourite model is the HydroCombi 18, which performs
splitting almost by itself. Heavy logs can be easily manoeuvred into position using a winch and log lifter; securing the trunk with the wood clamping tip increases safety during splitting, and
your back will thank you for it, even in the evening. I hope that one day we’ll be able to call ‘the Powerful One’ our own.
To process firewood, Cornelia Simon initially used smaller log splitters, but these proved unable to cope with the demands in the long term. When she had to process large quantities of wood from felled poplars, an HydroCombi log splitter was used for the first time. To this day, she still borrows the device regularly, as this is currently the most cost-effective solution. Using a log splitter allows you to process large quantities of wood efficiently, whereas splitting wood with an axe is now more of a sporting activity.
Alongside her passion for sustainability and self-sufficiency, Cornelia Simon founded the ‘enywear’ label for sustainable workwear together with her sister.
