The perfect interplay between the feed belt and the X-splitting blade ensures a consistent, high-quality cut – even with large wood diameters. The pieces of wood are fed past the knife in a synchronised manner by the feed belt and are split by the knife. Splitting the logs several times with the X-knife produces the square-section logs characteristic of the VARIO system, whilst maintaining a consistently high standard of quality. The log edge length can be adjusted continuously variable from 5 to 15 cm via the display in the operating cabin – for maximum flexibility and ease of operation.

Thanks to the integrated chip extraction unit, any chips produced do not enter the immediate working area of the saw unit, but are collected directly and channelled away centrally. This ensures a clean cutting range and reduces the amount of cleaning required. The chips produced are reliably collected directly by the extraction system fitted to the chip box and extracted at a rate of 1500–1800 m³ of air per hour. The 7.5 m length pressure hose, with a diameter of 120 mm, enables the precise discharge of chips – either for collection in a pile away from the machine or into a container provided by the customer. The collected chips can be put to good use. The well-engineered design of the solid, all-steel fan rotor ensures durability and smooth cleaning operation. A clamping assembly on the bearing shaft ensures uniform fastening and smooth running on the bearing shaft itself. To allow easy access for maintenance and cleaning work, the entire extraction system can be unlocked with just one screw and pulled away from the chip tray using two integrated guide rails. A cyclone can be fitted as an optional extra to complement the chip extraction unit. This separates the chips from the blower air.

The integrated residual wood ejection allows for the clean and precise removal of pieces of wood that are not to be split. By simply and easily actuating the joystick in the operating cabin, the rocker is swivelled and the piece of wood is discharged via the sloping wood chute through the residual wood ejection. For transport, the chute for the residual wood ejection can be folded up and secured using locking pins. A camera with AI-powered person detection issues both visual and audible warnings when it detects movement of people in the discharge area next to the machine, thereby ensuring safety in monitoring this hazard zone.

The buffer belt with a length of 2 metres serves as the buffer storage for pieces of wood that have been sawn by the PowerCut. This ensures that the AutoSplit remains in continuous operation, even if the saw does not provide a constant feed of logs during log feeding. The hydraulically driven conveyor belt with a mechanical link is controlled in synchronisation with the feed belt in the AutoSplit, ensuring that the sections are fed into the splitting area at regular intervals. The buffer belt can be controlled manually if necessary, for example to close gaps between the pieces of timber on the buffer belt and thus ensure a continuous splitting process. To prevent the pieces of wood from twisting or tipping over on the buffer belt, side walls ensure optimum guidance and centring. These are tool-free adjustable to suit the length of the section.

When the wood feed is activated via the joystick, the double grapple opens automatically, the saw blade swings into its starting position and the saw rocker lifts, thereby bringing the air stop into position. Only then is the trunk fed forward from the feed rollers to the wood stop. To ensure a smooth feed rate, a manipulator assists with aligning the trunk where necessary. You can then use the joystick to activate the saw function. Before the sawing process begins, the double grapple closes automatically and the wood rocker lowers, causing the wood stop to release. Only then does the sawing process begin. Once the timber has been sawn, the wood rocker transfers the cut piece either to the buffer belt or diverts it via the residual wood ejection.

The solid yet adjustable wood stop ensures that all pieces of wood have the same length – without having to pay attention to measurement marks. In conjunction with the hydraulic venting system, the stop is automatically moved away from the trunk and lowered by the wood rocker prior to the cut, in order to minimise the risk of the saw becoming jammed during the cutting process. The mounting point is easily accessible – either via the maintenance door at the residual wood ejection, which has a folding step, or directly from the cabin via the platform next to the buffer belt. This can be adjusted to 20, 25, 30, 33, 40, 45 or 50 cm simply by loosening four screws. As the possible section lengths are marked on both sides, the desired length can be easily adjusted. If a piece of timber is too short to be securely held by the gripper as the feed rate takes it to the wood stop, it cannot be sawn in this way. In this case, it is aligned using the length markings on the feed frame, to the right of the saw unit. There, the double grapple holds the piece of wood securely in place so that it can be cut to length precisely with the chainsaw. The off-cut remains on the wood rocker and is ejected separately via the residual wood ejection. To ensure the final sections of the trunk are cut to the best possible dimensions or to achieve intermediate lengths, the stop plate can be adjusted hydraulically by up to 5 cm using joysticks from inside the cab.

After the sawing process, the piece of wood initially remains on the wood rocker. Simply by actuating the joystick, the wood rocker is tilted and the piece of wood is transferred to the buffer belt. Two tension springs then ensure that the mechanism returns automatically to its original position. Shut-off valves ensure that the wood rocker remains securely in a stable position when not in use to ensure safety. If the joystick is actuated in the opposite direction, the wood rocker swings towards the residual wood ejection. In the process, residual pieces are removed separately. The seesaw remains in this position. By briefly activating the transfer function to the buffer belt, it can be returned to its original position. To ensure gentle discharge via the residual wood ejection, the feed rate in this direction can be individually adjusted using an integrated throttle. During wood feed, the support on the wood rocker is at the same height as the feed, which reliably prevents shorter trunks from tipping over. Thanks to its ingenious design, the saw rocker not only lowers automatically before the sawing process begins, but also moves away from the saw unit at the same time. This also causes the wood stop mounted on it to move away from the trunk. This reduces the risk of the saw blade becoming jammed whilst sawing – particularly when working with curved trunks. Lowering and venting the rocker before sawing can be disabled by pressing the joystick button – ideal for preventing short pieces of timber from tipping over. In addition, the rocker can be held in the lower position in the same way, for example to prevent a trunk with a powerful root collar from getting caught on the rocker frame. This ensures a smooth workflow. The centrally located lubrication rail on the wood rocker – easily accessible via the platform next to the buffer belt – enables convenient and efficient lubrication of all the moving components of the wood rocker.

The electronic control system continuously records sensor and input values ( .g. positions, temperatures, pressures, switch states), processes them in accordance with a pre-programmed sequence and then controls the outputs accordingly. It combines all the functions of the AutoSplit 700 and the system’s safety circuit on a clear, easy-to-use 7-inch touchscreen. The integrated control system processes a wide range of real-time data, such as the position of the splitting blade, the wood diameter, the hydraulic pressure and the oil temperature. At the same time, it monitors safety circuits and protective covers, controls the central lubrication system and additional functions, such as starting and stopping the conveyor belt. Operational data can be digitally recorded and analysed via an IIoT connection. Thanks to intelligent functions such as OptiSplit, VolumeControl, and counters for splitting cycles and performance data (e. e.g. daily and total counters for cubic metres, loose cubic metres or solid cubic meters), the entire timber processing process can be efficiently monitored and documented. Particularly handy: The daily counters can be reset at any time, individual user parameters can be set directly within the system, and the wood feed rate is displayed as both the actual and target values. Even special operating modes such as ‘Sawing Only’ (OnlyCut), reduced lift or idle runs can be activated directly via the touchscreen. A software update can be carried out by the customer either via a memory card or, once authorised, via remote maintenance on the control system, provided there is a stable internet connection.

The AutoSplit 700 processes pieces of wood with a length of 20 to 50 cm fully automatically into firewood ready for the stove. The log edge length can be adjusted continuously variable from 5 to 15 cm – conveniently via a display located directly in the operating cabin. The PowerCut transfers the pieces of wood to the buffer belt, which controls them and feeds them evenly into the splitting channel. Once the start command has been issued once, the PLC control system takes over the remaining work processes fully automatically. A wood holder holds the logs securely in place during the splitting process using the x-shaped splitting blade. After each splitting cycle, a spring-loaded feed belt moves the pieces of wood forward by the set distance. Robust sheet metal cleats protect the feed belt from wear and tear. This produces uniform logs with a square cross-section. The desired log size is continuously variable and can be adjusted by changing the feed distance. This means that firewood can be produced in exactly the size required by the customer. Innovative features to boost splitting performance: Thanks to OptiSplit, the stroke of the splitting blade automatically adjusts to the length of the material being split – thereby minimising idle travel. Under certain conditions, the splitting stroke can also be limited via the control system, so that the knife does not have to travel the full length of the gap. If a heavily knotted log cannot be split on the first attempt, the log splitter automatically attempts to perform splitting by moving the log in a targeted manner at several points. The number of automatic splitting attempts can be set individually via the control system. If the process is still unsuccessful after several attempts, automatic mode is stopped and an error message appears on the display – manual intervention is required: Using two buttons on the control unit, the position of the piece of timber on the feed belt can be adjusted manually. At this point, a new splitting process can be initiated manually by performing actuation of two further buttons. This process can be repeated as often as you like. The access hatches in the splitting area allow fast and easy access for cleaning and maintenance work. To ensure maximum safety, integrated safety switches ensure that the machine switches off automatically when a maintenance cover is opened.

As a key component of the AutoSplit, the feed belt ensures that the pieces of wood are continuously transported through the splitting channel until they are transferred to the conveyor belt. A sensor above the buffer belt detects whether there is any timber on it. If wood is detected, the system measures the diameter of the trunk to calculate its volume and starts the automatic splitting process. If no wood is detected, the AutoSplit’s automatic mode stops to prevent idling and unnecessary energy consumption. Robust metal strips are bolted to the upper side of the hydraulically driven conveyor belt with a mechanical link, spaced closely together. Wear and tear on the conveyor belt is significantly reduced, as these protect the belt from mechanical stress during wood feed and the splitting process. The frame of the feed belt is spring-loaded to effectively compensate for the movement of the timber during the splitting process. This protects the knife guides, the conveyor belt and the feed frame, reduces the splitting force required and thus extends the service life of the entire system. A sensor ensures maximum operational safety by detecting the maximum spring travel and, in such cases, stopping the splitting process to prevent damage to the machine. The control system can be used to specify how the system should respond in the event of this error: Either an error message is displayed, or automatic mode continues without interruption. In this case, the logs that have not been completely split (large pieces of wood) remain in the production flow. Or automatic mode is stopped – in which case manual intervention is required: Using two buttons on the splitting unit, the position of the log can be adjusted manually via the feed belt. A new splitting process can then be initiated manually by actuating two further buttons. This process can be repeated as often as you like.

Two gripper arms, mounted on rotatable bearings above the feed area, secure the trunk directly in front of the saw unit and ensure it remains securely in position throughout the entire sawing process. Before sawing, the grapple arms are automatically closed by two hydraulic cylinders until they are firmly against the trunk. Shut-off valves ensure that they hold it securely in place. Robust ridges on the contact surfaces ensure extra grip and effectively prevent the wood from twisting or slipping. Once the sawing process is complete, the double grapple opens automatically when the wood feed is activated. The bearings on the gripper arms are easy to lubricate via the central lubrication rail.
